  • When are insects most active?
Insects can have a significant impact on grain, reducing its quality and quantity: Quality Insects can reduce the protein content of grain and the percentage of seeds that germinate. Quantity Insects can cause grain to lose weight and be rejected by buyers. Globally, an estimated quarter to third of the world's grain crop is lost to insects during storage. Infestation One tonne of infested grain can produce over a million insects in a year, which can spread to other grain storage. Some signs of insect activity in grain include: Shot holes: Rice weevils leave holes in grain and lay larvae inside. Webbing: Indian meal moth larvae weave dense webbing on grain and other surfaces. Odor: The lesser grain borer leaves behind a sweet, musty scent. Temperature: Sawtoothed grain beetle activity can cause grain to overheat. To prevent insect activity in grain, you can: Monitor: Regularly monitor grain to identify pests before they become a problem. Control moisture: Keep grain moisture content below 12%. Control insects: Control insects at loading to prevent them from creating moisture. Use aeration: Use an aeration system to manipulate the internal temperature. Use fumigants: Use fumigants like methyl bromide, phosphine, or mixtures of carbon tetrachloride and carbon disulfide
  • Why Store Grain On-Farm?
Storing grain on a farm offers many benefits, including: Preserving quality: Grain storage protects grains from pests, moisture, and other contaminants, which helps maintain their nutritional value and market value. Improving efficiency: On-farm storage can help with harvest operations by reducing delays from transportation and delivery. Maximizing profit: Farmers can store grain and sell it at the best time to maximize profits. Reducing road damage: Fewer trucks on the road during harvest time can help reduce road damage. Planning for weather: Silos can help plan for wet seasons or drought, and provide stock feed or seed to help weather storms. Exploring markets: Farmers can explore markets farther away during the off-season when transportation costs are lower. Investment: Silos can be considered a good investment, saving on fuel and wear and tear. To ensure the long-term success of on-farm grain storage, it's important to regularly inspect and maintain the storage facility and its surroundings, reach out to GrainPro Solutions for a chat today.
